“Instead, notice the places where you STILL create, and notice the ideas you DO have… Go have a creative experience” Resonates with me. I have spells where I go without many creative ideas or urges to write, etc. I often feel like, I lost my creativity, was I ever even creative? Am I creative? Is it gone forever? And then I’ll have another magical moment of freedom where I out of nowhere write a sentence I love, or a doodle that feels write. And it’s back. It takes a creative experience to remember I am creative.

Creativity is the vision that comes before the creation.

Craft, however, is the ability to make that vision real.

I always thought of myself as, “not an artist but a craftsman” as I thought of the artist side as the creative part and the craftsman side as a person who can look at something that has been created and copy but vary the creation to something I craft.

I really appreciate your perspective on the definition of creativity and crafting.

My definition of myself in this regard is evolving as I guess all perspectives do, or should do, as you broaden your world.

Thank you for this piece…and keep writing 🐝

Thank you Buzzy! I appreciate your insight. I think both the creativity and craft deserve our time and attention in focused, deliberate practice. But also, to do one is to practice the other (at some level at least). I'm glad your self-concept is shifting. Mine certainly is. ♥️

This is so spot on! I’m my most intuitive in writing when I don’t think too much. But I also love your piano student example. I play the piano too, but haven’t had a teacher since I was 15. I can play a lot of the pieces from back then, but learning new ones I feel like I’m lacking the ‘logic’ (music theory) that sits behind it all. I’ve tried studying it, but for the life of me can’t understand it properly. I’d love to be able to create music, but without a ‘rule book’ I’m quite lost. Anyhow, what stuck with me as well in this article is the quote about making new experiences to create new beliefs. I couldn’t agree more and will take this with me. Thank you 😊

I found your article to be in alignment to my process. Interestingly I have needed to create mantras to move along the path to practice writing and to enjoy play time with various art mediums. Ideas all over the place…execution, not so much. I appreciate your words and examples. I enjoyed this piece and I look forward to reading more of your work.

I am so gald you found me then! A good mantra can be such a boon, and I know what you mean about feeling "all over the place". I sometimes suffer from an overabundance of ideas as well. But I love writing, and I love sharing what I’m learning. I hope what I write helps you in all the best ways!
